Viola's Visit To Sweden 2024

ISPCAN International Congress, Uppsala, Sweden, August 19-20, 2024

At the 2024 ISPCAN International Congress on Child Abuse and Neglect in Uppsala, Sweden, Dr. Viola Vaughan-Eden co-presented two dynamic sessions alongside Stacie Schrieffer LeBlanc, JD, MEd, and Christina Rodriguez, PhD, focusing on prevention and family support in cases of child abuse.

  • Creating Safe Spaces: The Role of No Hit Zones in Preventing Child Abuse and Fostering Nonviolent Environments
  • This session highlighted how trusted professionals - such as healthcare workers, educators, and social service providers - can influence parents attitudes toward physical discipline.  The team explored the critical role of No Hit Zones as simple yet impactful policies that empower bystanders to intervene safely when witnessing physical punishment in public settings.  Participants were introduced to effective strategies, research-backed outcomes, and ready-to-use tools, including No Hit Zone policies, signage, and Painless Parenting resources to promote safer environments for children.

  • Understanding and Supporting Nonoffending Caregivers in Cases of Child Sexual Abuse: A Comprehensive Exploration
  • This in-depth workshop addressed the vital role nonoffending caregivers play in a child's healing and in multidisciplinary responses to child sexual abuse.  The session examined maternal culpability, caregiver belief, and the profound influence of caregiver support on a child's recovery.  Participants gained practical, trauma-informed strategies for engaging caregivers, addressing cultural considerations, and guiding families toward healthy outcomes.  The workshop also discussed broader implications for research, clinical practice, and child protection policy.
