Viola's Visit To Ireland 2013

In September 2013, Dr. Vaughan-Eden presented at the Thirteenth International Society on the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (ISPCAN) European Regional Conference on Interviewing Young and Reluctant Children to Assess for Sexual Abuse: A Review of the APSAC Practice Guidelines on Forensic Interviewing in Cases of Suspected Child Abuse.

The responses children give during interviews are deeply influenced by their language development and communication abilities. In cases of child maltreatment, a well-conducted interview is a critical tool for gathering accurate and reliable information. This training equipped participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to conduct developmentally appropriate interviews, establish rapport, and recognize the unique ways children express themselves.

Viola also explained how cultural differences can create barriers that hinder effective communication, often leading to misunderstandings and misinformed decision-making. Additionally, the training covered best practices for assessing child victims of sexual abuse, taking into account developmental, social, and behavioral factors to ensure a comprehensive and sensitive approach.

As President of APSAC, she met with colleagues from around the world to address ways to improve policy and practice responses to child maltreatment.
